Houses and pipes in Lubbock
Older neighborhoods near downtown and Texas Tech, including Tech Terrace, Overton and the streets around the university, have homes from the 1920s through the 1950s. Many have cast iron or clay laterals, and some are on pier-and-beam foundations.
Postwar neighborhoods spread south and west through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, mostly slab homes with cast iron drains underneath that have been collecting scale ever since.
South and southwest Lubbock, built from the 1980s onward, have plastic drains and outside cleanouts. Growth continues toward the edges of the city with large new subdivisions.
Lubbock's water is hard, and scale builds up quickly in traps, shower drains and water heaters.
Dust storms, called haboobs, roll across the plains in spring, carrying fine soil into any open pipe or vent. Winter brings hard freezes that can stop drains in exterior walls and garages.
Who handles what in Lubbock
Lubbock's city utilities run wastewater collection and treatment. The property owner maintains the private service line from the house to the city main.

Lubbock drains through the year
Spring brings dust storms that blow soil into uncapped cleanouts and roof vents. Summer heat is intense but dry, broken by sudden thunderstorms and the occasional hail.
Winter can bring sudden hard freezes and blizzards. Drains in exterior walls and garages freeze. The fall semester at Texas Tech fills rentals with students.
What drain cleaning costs in Lubbock
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Sink, tub or toilet cleared | $120–$255 |
| Main line cleared from a cleanout | $180–$415 |
| Hydro jetting | $310–$750 |
| Thawing a frozen drain | $175–$400 |
| Camera inspection | $140–$365 |
Newer south and southwest Lubbock homes with an outside cleanout are quick jobs. Scaled-up cast iron under an older slab, thawing a line during a norther and rentals with no known cleanout take longer.
Before the plumber arrives
- 1
Stop water use
Pause laundry and showers.
- 2
Frozen or clogged?
On a frigid morning, a slow drain on an outside wall may be frozen.
- 3
Check the cleanout cap
A missing cap lets dust blow in.
- 4
One fixture or many?
Tell the plumber which drains are affected.
Tech Terrace and Overton
Tech Terrace, just south of campus, is a historic neighborhood of homes from the 1920s through the 1950s, many now rented to students and faculty. Laterals there are often cast iron or clay under mature trees. Roots, scale and corrosion are common. Overton, north of campus, has been heavily redeveloped with apartments and student housing, where shared lines carry heavy loads.
Student rentals
Texas Tech's tens of thousands of students fill rental homes and apartments across central Lubbock. Hair, grease and wipes cause most clogs. Landlords who clean the main before each semester and provide hair catchers and trash cans avoid most emergencies.
Postwar slab homes
Neighborhoods built from the 1950s through the 1970s have slab foundations with cast iron drains. Hard water and decades of use have left heavy scale. Descaling and lining can restore flow without breaking the slab.
A typical Lubbock call
On a January morning after a blue norther drops temperatures into the single digits, a family in South Lubbock finds the washing machine drain won't take water. The plumber finds the drain line frozen where it runs through an exterior garage wall, thaws it and recommends insulation.
Dust storms
When a dust storm rolls in, fine soil gets into everything. Uncapped cleanouts, broken vent caps and outdoor drains collect it, and it settles in pipes where it catches paper and grease. Check caps after big storms and keep them tight.
Hard water
Lubbock draws water from Lake Alan Henry, Lake Meredith and wells in the Ogallala Aquifer, and much of it is heavy with minerals. Scale builds quickly inside traps, shower drains, dishwasher lines and water heaters. A bathroom sink that slows a bit more each month usually has a crusted trap. Pull it and clean it every year or two, keep a hair catcher in each shower and flush the water heater, and a softener will slow down what builds next.
Winter freezes
Lubbock winters can swing from 60 degrees to single digits in a day when a blue norther blows through. Pipes in exterior walls, garages and crawlspaces are the first to freeze. Before winter, wrap any drain or supply line that runs through an unheated space, seal gaps where cold air reaches the pipes and keep garage doors closed. During a hard freeze, open sink cabinets on outside walls and let faucets drip. If a drain freezes anyway, warm the space slowly and never use an open flame.
Game days
Texas Tech football Saturdays fill Jones Stadium and every restaurant and bar along Broadway and University Avenue. Kitchens there push a lot of fryer oil and grease, and interceptors that aren't pumped on time back up at the worst moment. At home, a tailgate or watch party with wings and fried food sends grease toward the kitchen drain. Pour cooled oil into a sealed container, wipe pans before washing and run plenty of hot water after the dishes.
Playa lakes and low spots
Lubbock is dotted with playa lakes, shallow basins that collect runoff after storms. Homes near them sit on low ground where water stands after heavy rain. Thunderstorms in late spring can drop a lot of water fast, and with nowhere to go but the playas and the streets, sewers can be overloaded and water can push back into low drains. A backwater valve helps homes that have had a storm backup.
Cotton country edges
Beyond the city limits, homes on farm and ranch land around Lubbock, Wolfforth and Shallowater often use septic systems. Slow drains throughout the house and wet or smelly spots over the field point to the tank, not the house pipes.
What to tell a Lubbock plumber
Give your neighborhood and the home's age, whether it's a student rental and whether the drain might be frozen. Mention any recent dust storm that could have blown soil into the line, and whether the cleanout cap is missing or cracked. If you're a tenant, have the landlord's contact ready so the visit can be approved quickly.
