Houses and pipes in North Las Vegas

The south end, below Craig Road and near Las Vegas Boulevard North, has homes from the 1940s through the 1970s on slabs with cast iron or clay sewer lines.

Neighborhoods built in the 1980s and 1990s between Craig Road and the 215 have ranch and two-story homes with early plastic or ABS drains.

Aliante, Eldorado, Shadow Creek's edges and the newest subdivisions north of the 215 were built from the 2000s onward with PVC drains.

All homes sit on slabs over caliche and desert soil, and water throughout the valley is very hard.

Nellis Air Force Base sits on the city's east edge, and many military families live in North Las Vegas.

The older south end

North Las Vegas incorporated in 1946, and its first neighborhoods grew up near Las Vegas Boulevard North and the old downtown. Small ranch homes on slabs, many built for workers and military families, have cast iron or clay sewer lines that are now fifty to seventy-five years old. Hard water scale, cracks from the alkaline soil and roots from mature trees cause most problems. A camera inspection shows whether a line can be cleaned or needs lining.

Explosive growth up north

From the late 1990s through the 2000s, North Las Vegas was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, with master-planned Aliante and thousands of homes spreading north toward the mountains. New homes have PVC drains that hold up well. Most calls there come from grease, wipes and kids' bathrooms, along with construction debris left in lines by busy builders.

Nellis families

Nellis Air Force Base, home of the Thunderbirds, brings many military families to North Las Vegas. Families move every few years, and many homes are rentals that have seen a lot of tenants. Property managers who jet lines between tenants and new families who get a camera inspection when moving in avoid surprises.

Hard water and scale

Like the rest of the valley, North Las Vegas has very hard water. Scale coats the inside of drain pipes, especially kitchen and laundry lines, narrowing them and catching grease. Hydro jetting removes scale and grease together.

A typical North Las Vegas call

In August, a family in a 1962 slab home near Lake Mead Boulevard notices the tub and toilet backing up when the washer drains. The plumber opens the yard cleanout and clears scale and roots from a big ash tree about twenty feet out. The camera shows the cast iron under the slab is heavily scaled with a crack near the foundation. They plan a liner.

New construction debris

In brand-new subdivisions, it isn't unusual for a plumber to pull out concrete chunks, drywall mud, rags or pipe scraps from a line that was never flushed properly after construction. If a new home has drain problems in its first year, check whether the builder's warranty covers it.

Caliche

North Las Vegas sits on caliche, a cement-like layer of desert soil. Digging to repair a sewer line can be slow and costly, so trenchless methods are popular.

Monsoon storms

Summer monsoon storms drop heavy rain on hard ground that doesn't absorb it. Water floods streets and washes, and low areas can see sewer surcharges. Watch for slow drains after big storms.

Busy family households

North Las Vegas has many young families and multigenerational households, with a lot of cooking and bathroom use. Grease from daily cooking and wipes flushed by kids are the leading causes of clogs. Keeping grease in a can and wipes in the trash prevents most of them.

Large households also tend to run the washer, dishwasher and showers back to back in the evening, which can push a partly clogged line over the edge all at once.

Restaurants along Craig Road

Craig Road, Ann Road, the Aliante area and the older strips along Las Vegas Boulevard North have many restaurants, from taquerias to chains. Interceptors pumped on schedule keep those kitchens from backing up.

Landscape trees

Older neighborhoods in the south end have mature ash, mulberry and pine trees, and their roots travel far for water in the desert heat. Cracked cast iron or clay joints attract them. Newer neighborhoods with young desert landscaping see far fewer root problems.

Cold nights

Winter nights in North Las Vegas can drop below freezing. Exposed irrigation, pool and garage pipes are most at risk. Insulate them before the first cold snap.

What helps the plumber

Mention whether you're in the older south end or the newer north side, the home's age, whether it's a rental and which drains are slow.
