Before the plumber arrives

  1. 1

    Stop running water

Every flush upstairs comes down to the basement.

  2. 2

    Raining hard?

If your block is flooding during a storm, the public sewer may be overloaded; call 311.

  3. 3

    Check the floor drain

Gray water around it means the lateral is backing up.

  4. 4

    Find the cleanout

On hillside homes, look on the downhill basement wall.

Packinghouse neighborhoods

From the 1880s through the mid twentieth century, KCK's packinghouses, rail yards and smelters employed thousands of immigrants. Armourdale, Argentine, Rosedale and Strawberry Hill filled with small frame homes, many built on steep hillsides above the river bottoms. Their clay laterals are about a century old, and some homes have no cleanout.

Strawberry Hill

Strawberry Hill, on a bluff overlooking downtown Kansas City, Missouri, was settled by Croatian and Slovenian immigrants who worked in the packinghouses. Its small homes and churches cling to steep streets. Laterals drop sharply to the main, and roots from yard trees work into the joints.

The 1951 flood

In July 1951, the Kansas River flooded Armourdale and the Argentine and Central Industrial districts, wiping out much of the packing industry. Levees now protect the river bottoms, but neighborhoods there still have high groundwater, and cracked laterals take in water during wet periods.

Combined sewers

KCK's older neighborhoods have combined sewers that overflow into the rivers during heavy rain. The Unified Government is working through a long-term plan to reduce overflows. When a summer cloudburst hits, the basements on the lowest streets are the first to see sewage at the floor drain. Backwater valves and disconnected downspouts help.

A typical KCK call

After a June storm, a family in a 1915 home in Rosedale finds water around the basement floor drain. The plumber opens the cleanout on the downhill wall and clears roots about thirty feet out. On the camera, the clay has separated at a joint where the hillside has shifted. A liner and a backwater valve go on the list.

Westheight Manor

Westheight Manor, a planned neighborhood from the 1910s and 1920s, has larger homes on curving, tree-lined streets. Long clay laterals and big trees mean roots.

Western Wyandotte County

Western Wyandotte County, around the Legends, Village West and Piper, has grown rapidly since 2000 with new homes and PVC drains. Grease and wipes cause most problems there.

Family kitchens

KCK's large Mexican and Central American communities, along with long-established Croatian and Slavic families, keep busy kitchens. Grease from daily cooking builds up in kitchen lines and laterals. Wiping pans and keeping a container for used oil prevent most kitchen clogs.

Restaurants on Central Avenue

Central Avenue's taquerias and panaderias, Strawberry Hill's restaurants and the busy area around the Legends serve big crowds. Kitchens stay open by pumping grease traps often.

Winter

KCK winters bring cold snaps that drop below zero. Back porch laundries and drafty basement corners are the weak spots. Keep the basement warm and leave a tap trickling on the coldest nights.

Older frame houses on hillsides often have one basement wall fully exposed, and pipes along that wall freeze first.

Hills and loess

Much of KCK sits on loess bluffs, fine wind-blown silt that can settle and erode. Laterals in loess can sag or shift on steep lots, creating low spots where waste collects.

Argentine and the smelter district

Argentine, on the south side of the Kansas River, grew around a silver smelter and the Santa Fe rail yards in the 1880s. Its frame houses climb steep hills above the river bottoms, and many are now home to Mexican American families who have lived there for generations. Laterals here are old clay, often long and steep, and some homes share connections or have no cleanout at all. Roots and sags are the usual findings. Adding an outside cleanout on the downhill side makes future service much simpler.

Quindaro and the north end

North KCK, including the historic Quindaro area along the Missouri River bluffs, has older homes on hilly, wooded lots. Quindaro was a free-state port and Underground Railroad stop before the Civil War. Long laterals under big trees and loess soil that can shift make roots and offset joints common.

Vacant homes and renovations

Some older KCK neighborhoods have vacant or long-neglected homes, and when they're bought and renovated, the lateral is often packed with roots or partly collapsed from years without use. A camera inspection before closing or starting renovation reveals whether the line can be cleaned or needs replacing, which can change the budget significantly.

When you call

Share the neighborhood, the home's age, how steep the lot is and whether there's a cleanout. Mention whether a storm came first.

Kansas City drain questions

Who handles sewer in Kansas City, Kansas?+

The Unified Government's Water Pollution Control division. The property owner keeps up the private lateral.

Why do KCK basements flood during storms?+

Older neighborhoods have combined sewers that fill quickly during heavy rain and can push water back into basements.

Do steep lots cause sewer problems?+
